From Haloes to Galaxies. II. The Fundamental Relations in Star Formation and Quenching

چکیده

Star formation and quenching are two of the most important processes in galaxy evolution. We explore local Universe interrelationships among key integrated properties, including stellar mass $M_*$, star rate (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), molecular gas $M_{\rm H_2}$, efficiency (SFE) to ratio $\mu$. aim identify fundamental scaling relations these properties their interrelationships. show H_2}$-SFR, SFR-$M_*$ H_2}$-$M_*$ relation can be simply transformed from $\mu$-sSFR, SFE-$\mu$ SFE-sSFR relation, respectively. The transformation, principle, increase or decrease scatter each relation. Interestingly, we find latter three all have significantly smaller than former corresponding relations. probability achieve observed small by accident is extremely close zero. This suggests that scatters driven a more physical connection quantities. then large due systematic dependence on other process. propose sSFR-$\mu$-SFE as Fundamental Formation Relation (FFR), which governs process, provides simple framework study Other relations, Kennicutt-Schmidt law, star-forming main sequence sequence, derived FFR.

Star Formation Quenching in Quasar Host Galaxies

Galaxy evolution is likely to be shaped by negative feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In the whole range of redshifts and luminosities studied so far, galaxies hosting an AGN frequently show fast and extended outflows consisting in both ionized and molecular gas. Such outflows could potentially quench the start formation within the host galaxy, but a clear evidence of negative feedbac...

Molecular Hydrogen and Global Star Formation Relations in Galaxies

We use hydrodynamical simulations of disk galaxies to study relations between star formation and properties of the molecular interstellar medium (ISM). We implement a model for the ISM that includes low-temperature (T < 104 K) cooling, directly ties the star formation rate to the molecular gas density, and accounts for the destruction of H2 by an interstellar radiation field from young stars. W...

Star Formation from Galaxies to Globules

The origin of the empirical laws of galactic-scale star formation are considered in view of the self-similar nature of interstellar gas and the observation that most local clusters are triggered by specific high-pressure events. The empirical laws suggest that galactic-scale gravity is involved in the first stages of star formation, but they do not identify the actual triggering mechanisms for ...

Quenching of Star Formation

In the last decade we have seen an enormous increase in the size and quality of spectroscopic galaxy surveys, both at low and high redshift. New statistical techniques to analyse large portions of galaxy spectra are now finding favour over traditional index based methods. Here we will review a new robust and iterative Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm, which solves several common iss...
